CelticsStrong: Being BIG

This website from ESPN shows the starting 5 on each team in the year.

I see Brooklyn, Chicago, Detroit, Golden State, Indiana, Los Angles (Clippers and Lakers), Memphis and Utah having the four and five spots filled with respectable bigs. That's 9 teams capable of giving you a bruising down low. 8/9 of those teams were playoff bound (the odd one being the Pistons who are very young). 7 of the other 8 playoff teams have at least one respectable big in one of those spots with the exception being Miami who has Bosh and Haslem, neither of those are traditional bigs. But I think it shows how important bigs are in the NBA even though they have reduced roles compared to that of the old days.

I think Sullinger will be a really good big for us in the four spot. He is a bruiser on the boards like Brooklyn's Reggie Evans, a bruiser in the post like Memphis's Zach Randolph and a bruiser on defense like Chicago's Joakim Noah.

But the five spot is unfilled and we need a "Chief" to get us back and I don't see a lot of players being a Chief.

These are the capable Centers that hit free agency this summer: Brandan WrightTimofey MozgovRyan HollinsDwight HowardSamuel DalembertNikola PekovicAndrew BynumDeJuan Blair and Al Jefferson.
And of that only Dwight HowardNikola Pekovic and Al Jefferson are really capable of filling our starting role. Unfortunately all three of them would never sign in Boston because unless they don't care about money we wouldn't be able to pay them.

In the summer of 2014 Greg MonroeAndrew BogutMarcin Gortat and DeMarcus Cousins are the young Centers that hit Free Agency and are capable of being the Future Celtic's starting five spot.
I think DeMarcus Cousins can be a great fit if he improves his rim protection and shot blocking. His level of talent and his passion for play would make him a great Celtic.
Greg Monroe would also need to improve his rim protection and shot blocking.

Of all these options it looks like it'll take a year to land our guy through free agency and it seems as though drafting a player and raising him is almost a better option. But in the 2013 Draft only Nerlens Noel can guaranteed be a starting five for the Future Celtics with Gorgui Dieng only potentially filling the role.

I'm really excited about what the Celtics will do for their five spot. Hopefully it's something good!
