Another one of the blogs I've left as a draft.
My history 30 class is all about Canada and Canadian Identity. It turns out that Canadians don't really know how to define ourselves. So the point of this history class is that we should come up with our own definition for being Canadian (which doesn't really help the problem of setting a general identity for all Canadians).
My view of Canada before taking this class is that we are very kind and respectful people that, if countries were a community of people, embody the superhero in the community. For we, supposedly, are the ones who fight for peace, we are morally correct, proud and strong. But as this history class continues. It seems that we are less and less this way.
But we were! At one point in time Canada was a country that all other countries should look up to. We were the perfect humanitarians. The Superman.
Now Canada is horrible. We've backed out of the KYOTO protocol, we've signed business agreements with China (another country that is far from humanitarian), we want to make a huge pipeline for tar-sands, and we don't favor education or young people. Our political leaders have become so extremely Capitalist that we are turning American. (And for you American people out there, this isn't an insult but it's the last thing Canadians want.) We aren't Superman, we're Aquaman.
What is Canada doing to be a Superman? Nothing. Because 'we' don't know how to be Super.
It's time for the next generation to start coming out from under the blankets. We aren't kids anymore. We can't be. And maybe we can make Canada an Ironman.
Refining Life.
