We Day 2013

So this is one of the many posts that I've had sitting as a draft for a while now. Basically on February 27, I had the opportunity to go to We Day Saskatchewan where the combined power of Me to We and Free the Children joined forces to celebrate the idea of me to we.

These two companies are sister companies of the same business structure. Me to We provides the social aspect of the nonprofit and Free the Children is the giving aspect. Both work well together to do the most good for the world. Listening to their stories - check out their websites - you can tell that they are growing and learning all the aspects of being the best charity. Not just solving problems by making schools but also by creating environments where kids can actually attend the schools and grow into model citizens.

We Day is an event that Me to We hosts. They have a bunch of these in a year and they invite all kinds of young people who are activists, leaders, communicators. Then We Day becomes a source of inspiration for all these young people, they tell us that we can do anything and get us pumped about what we can do.

And there was a quote that I've been walking around saying for a while now.
This is the generation the world is waiting for. Craig Kielburger

And I've been saying it because it applies to me in so many ways.

Education in Canada is brutal, nothing is standardized, nothing makes sense. From province to province kids get completely different educations and no one really cares. The rate of kids that don't continue to university after high school keeps growing and when the education system (here in Saskatchewan) reforms, they reform it so that we teach the bare minimum to these kids so that when they leave high school they have a better chance of surviving. The logic is if these kids aren't going to university, then we should make high school easier so that these kids can get out of education easier. Does that even make sense? No. It doesn't. Its time smarter people took over. It's time for my generation to take over.

This is just one example, but the examples compound and compile to become greater and greater reasons why my generation will be taking over and why the current one needs to get out fast. Canada is backing out of environmental campaigns. Canada isn't spearheading research on reliable energy. Canada isn't protecting the environment. What good is Canada doing? Where is our pride? Where is the leadership of Pearson and Trudeau? It sure isn't in the current generation. (And don't say "If your generation is so great why aren't they voting." Because to that I say "Why would we continue voting for that old generation, its time they stepped down.")

This is the generation the world is waiting for. And with some guidance, patience and time, I hope we will be and I believe we will be.
