CelticsStrong: GM moves
I like Danny Ainge, I really do. But he's made a lot of mistakes. A lot of teams compare the Celtics and the Spurs because they are very similar type of teams. But the Spurs win more and that's because their players are better. This article from CelticsLife explains why. I highly recommend a read of this.
Red Auerbach, the great Celtic GM, became great because of the way he played the GM game. He was basically the one who acquired all of those retired jersey's anyways. A lot of the executive decisions he made used cleverness and maneuvering to get higher in the draft or in draft day trades. He was able to get Bill Russell who got picked 2nd even though the Celtics didn't have the second pick. He was able to get McHale and Parish in one swift deal even though Parish was on a different team altogether.
To build the Future Celtics, Ainge is going to have to rely on the Draft for an input of talent like Red did and stop making so many mistakes there. Before Ainge can try to rebuild the Celtics, he needs to rebuild his game around drafting players instead of Free Agency and trades like he has in the past.
As for the 2013 draft Ainge should be trying to acquire all the draft picks he can get. On the realistic side I really like Dennis Schroeder, Gorgui Dieng and Steve Adams in this years draft. But if Ainge can pull a Red-like move and land Nerlens Noel! With Garnett to mentor him, we'll have our starting Center in no time, but if Ainge can't do that, then maybe Free Agency is the only other option to get our final Big Three member of the Future Celtics.
