Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Review

There are so many things that make this movie utterly fantastic.

  • The depth of the characterizations.
  • The realness of the apes.
  • The plot.
  • The script.
  • How multidimensional Caesar is.
  • The fact that the apes and humans both are depicted properly and it isn't one sided.
  • Caesar.
  • How multidimensional the movie is.
  • How the themes of family, trust and race are realised.
All in all, extremely well realised movie. It's all about Caesar and they keep it that way. I was thinking about how the old Planet of the Apes films only reference Caesar and they could have done a lot more with the character, but I'm glad they didn't. I feel like, at that time, they wouldn't have realised Caesar as well as they do in these films. I can't wait for the third and final installment.

My rating: the frequent 10/10 doesn't do this film justice. 11/10,

My favorite part: The movie starts and ends with Caesar's eyes. The beginning zooms out from them, and the end zooms into them. First of all, it was fantastic to watch both sequences. Second of all, wow that CGI makeup on the actor, Andy Serkis, insanely awesome. They're are blended so well. Lastly, the difference. In the opening, Caesar's eyes look crazed but focused, deadly; he's going to come at you like the animal that he is. In the closing, completely different. Caesar's eyes are deep and human, filled with all the emotional depth of a human, the love, the passion, the trust, the care. Just those two sequences should be enough to get one to watch the film, to find out what happens in between. Below is a still from the opening of the film.
