X-MEN DAYS OF FUTURE PAST REVIEW

Wow, what an excellent movie!!

I remember in the beginning I was worried about there being so many characters in this movie. I mean, look at this picture and tell me there isn't enough characters in this movie,

And there are definitely more big time characters on the cast list. I was so worried that they'd all be under developed, and the movie would be a huge stick bomb because of it. But that could not be more false.

Bryan Singer (the director and head of the X-Men Cinematic Universe) did an excellent job in two main things: he beautifully followed the rule "show, don't tell" and he stitched the movie perfectly with the other ones.

  • These days, a lot of movies are terrible because the director doesn't follow the "show, don't tell" rule, which basically gets to the idea that in a movie, information should be displayed through visuals and not through script. For example, the second Star Wars trilogy doesn't follow the rule and that's why we have Anakin explaining his relationship with Obi-Wan in this long boring scene where it could have been shown to us in the previous chase scene. Showing instead of telling works really well with this movie because we get to see all the mutant power sets.
  • Movie Cinematic Universes have the upper-hand when it comes to character development because each movie can build on top of the other. Having a single visionary also helps. Because Bryan Singer builds on top of the other movies (in some cases) he is able to only show characters that have a lot of meaning without having to develop them much in the current movie.
The only flaw that I really felt from this movie was it's lack of diversity. Almost all of the characters are white males and it gets pretty noticeable, in a franchise built on diversity (humans vs mutants and different kinds of mutants) not having that diversity is pretty bad.

The end credits scene is totally awesome, AGE OF APOCALYPSE 2016!!
